FBA dangerous goods (hazmat) review process

The Dangerous Goods team reviews each ASIN converted to Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA) within 4 business days, if identified as a possible dangerous good. A business day is from Sunday to Thursday, excluding public holidays.

The identification as to whether a product is a possible dangerous good or not is mainly based on catalog information. It is therefore imperative that you provide complete and accurate information right from listing creation or conversion to FBA, including a complete and detailed product description and bullet points.

If the dangerous goods (DG) information you provide is complete and correct, we will complete the review and classify your product within 4 business days' timeframe.

However, if the information you provided is missing, incomplete, inaccurate, or otherwise conflicting, your product may be blocked for sale through Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA). If that happens, you will need to provide a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) or an exemption sheet (for batteries and battery-powered products and for products that do not contain harmful chemicals) through the Upload dangerous goods documents tool.

Providing a complete and valid SDS when you create your FBA listing will help you avoid delays. For more information, see Required dangerous good information and documentation.

Important: If your product is identified as a possible dangerous good while you already have inventory in one or several Amazon fulfillment centers, you will have 14 business days to provide the requested documentation. Failure to provide the documentation during that timeframe will result in the disposal of the inventory, at your expense.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my ASIN under dangerous goods review?

Amazon performs regular reviews on products in our fulfillment centers that may be regulated as dangerous goods. These reviews help ensure that shipments meet regulatory requirements and safety standards for buyers and our employees.

If your ASIN is under review, it likely contains a battery, chemicals, or other substances that may make your product subject to transportation or storage regulations. More information often is needed for Amazon to complete classification of your product.

Products also might be flagged for review when changes are made to the detail page that don’t align with information previously submitted.

Some products regulated as dangerous goods may surprise you. To learn more, see the Dangerous goods identification guide and Examples of products that may be regulated as dangerous goods.

What are dangerous goods?

Dangerous goods, also called hazardous materials or hazmat, are items or substances that could pose a risk to health, safety, property, or the environment during handling, transportation, or storage because they are flammable, pressurized, corrosive, or otherwise harmful. These products are regulated for transportation or storage, or both.

To learn more, see the Dangerous goods identification guide and Examples of products that may be regulated as dangerous goods.

What should I do if my product is under dangerous goods review?

Verify that you have converted or attempted to convert your product to FBA. If you have not done so, attempt conversion first. Then check the ASIN look-up tool to verify if your ASIN went through review or not. If it is still under review, wait 4 business days (Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays) for the review to complete and recheck your ASIN. At this point, and if applicable, provide a manufacturer safety data sheet (SDS) or an exemption sheet on the Upload dangerous good documents page (see table below for common problems with SDS).

Note: Sellers are responsible for ensuring that products sent to Amazon fulfillment centers comply with FBA policies and any legal requirements regarding dangerous goods, even if the products are not currently restricted by FBA.

How do I submit an SDS or an exemption sheet?

You can upload an SDS or an exemption sheet through the Upload dangerous goods documents page.

I’ve already uploaded an SDS or an exemption sheet. Why is my ASIN still under review?

Each new document upload will be reviewed within 4 business days (Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays). Check the ASIN look-up tool to verify if your ASIN went through review or not. If it did, and the 4 business day period has passed, it is likely that your SDS or exemption sheet was rejected. Review Required dangerous good information and documentation and check your SDS for these common mistakes:

Safety Data Sheet (SDS) common mistakes
1 The product name or brand on the SDS does not exactly match the product name or brand on the detail page.
2 Information in the hazard identification section and the transportation section conflicts. For example, the hazard identification sections states the product is flammable but the transportation section does not.
3 The SDS does not contain all 16 mandatory sections.
4 The product’s flash point is below 140 degrees Fahrenheit but the product is declared as not regulated, instead of flammable, in the transportation section.
5 The SDS is either not dated or is over 5 years old.
6 An invalid document has been uploaded instead of an SDS, such as a test report or certification sheet.

My product doesn’t contain a battery. Why is the ASIN under review?

Your ASIN may be under review because:

  • Your product needs or may need a battery to function and detailed battery information wasn’t provided when you created the ASIN or the detail page. Products that need to be powered and lack detailed power source information may also be flagged for dangerous goods review.
  • Batteries are mentioned on the product detail page or in buyer reviews, and the product was flagged for dangerous goods review.

In this case, complete and upload a battery exemption sheet.

  • Your product may contain / be sold with other possible hazardous items (e.g., screen cleaner, aerosol) and the product was flagged for dangerous good review.

In this case, obtain and upload a Safety Data Sheet.

I uploaded the required dangerous goods documentation. What now?

The document review takes 4 business days (Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays). Always use the Upload dangerous goods documents tool to provide SDS or exemption sheets to Amazon. If you provide your documents by contacting Seller Support, the document review will take minimum 7 business days.

Once you have uploaded the document, you can use the Look up an ASIN tool at the top of this page to see if the dangerous goods review for your ASIN has been completed or if more information is required. If you have inventory in an Amazon fulfillment center, we’ll send you the results of the review by email.

Once the review has been completed, verify that you have converted your product to FBA. If you have not done so yet, then convert your product.

What notifications will I receive during the review process?

When an ASIN’s classification changes – for example, from non-dangerous good to dangerous good – sellers who have inventory in an Amazon fulfillment center will receive an email detailing the impact of the change and outlining next steps.

To see the classification status of your ASIN, use the Look up an ASIN tool near the top of this page or search “dangerous goods” in Seller Central help.

I disagree with how my ASIN was classified. What should I do?

If the dangerous goods review for your product has been completed and you disagree with results, you can upload a new SDS or exemption sheet supporting your claim. You can also initiate a dispute using the Look up an ASIN tool.
